Random genetic drift in the female germline explains the rapid segregation of mammalian mitochondrial DNA
-
Jenuth JO, Peterson AC, Fu IC, Shoubridge EA: Random genetic drift in the female germline explains the rapid segregation of mammalian mitochondrial DNA. Nature Genet 1996, 14:146-151 This study of heteroplasmy in mice demonstrated that the pattern of segregation of mitochondrial DNA variants can be explained by random genetic drift in early oogenesis. The effective number of segregating units for mitochondrial DNA was estimated to be approximately 200.

-
Taanman J-W, Bodnar AG, Cooper JM, Morris AAM, Clayton PT, Leonard JV, Schapira AHV: Molecular mechanisms in mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. Hum Mol Genet 1997, 6:935-942.
