    • McKay CJ, Gallagher G, Brooks B, Imrie CW, Baxter JN: Increased monocyte cytokine production in association with systemic complications in acute pancreatitis. Br J Surg 1996, 83:919-923. Systemic complications in patients with acute pancreatitis were associated with increased in vitro secretion by monocytes of the cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and -8. This suggests a potential benefit for cytokine inhibitors in reducing the frequency of multiorgan system failure in acute pancreatitis.
