Pediatric pain practices: A national survey of health professionals
-
Broome ME, Richtsmeier A, Maikler V, Alexander M: Pediatric pain practices: a national survey of health professionals. J Pain Symptom Manage 1996, 11:312-320. This questionnaire survey of the attitudes and clinical practices of physicians and nurses shows that protocols for pain management are not followed for most children, and particularly not for infants and younger children. Increased knowledge base, altered attitudes, and additional resource allocation may improve pediatric pain management in these institutions.

Pain and satisfaction with pain control in seriously ill hospitalized adults: Findings from the SUPPORT research investigations

Desbliens NA, Wu AW, Broste SK, Wenger NS, Connors AF, Lynn J, Yasui Y, Phillips RS, Fulkerson W: Pain and satisfaction with pain control in seriously ill hospitalized adults: findings from the SUPPORT research investigations. Crit Care Med 1996, 24:1953-1961. A preliminary attempt at quantifying patient satisfaction with pain control in critically ill adults and relating these outcomes to demographic, psychologic, and clinical data. Despite methodologic problems pointed out in an accompanying editorial, these data are clinically important and will stimulate much more research.

Use of patient-controlled analgesia for pain control for children receiving bone marrow transplant
-
Dunbar PJ, Buckley P, Gavrin JR, Sanders JE, Chapman CR: Use of patient-controlled analgesia for pain control for children receiving bone marrow transplant J Pain Symptom Manage 1995, 10:604-611. Clinical experience with patient-controlled analgesia morphine or hydromorphone in preteen children (4 to 12 years) undergoing bone marrow transplant showed a low incidence of drug misuse, accidental overdose, or difficulty weaning from the opioids. Nintendo experts (children > 6 years age) are qualified to use patient-controlled analgesia pumps, despite the regression in developmental milestones caused by hospitalization.
