1. Simons K: Preschool vision screening: rationale, methodology and outcome. Surv Ophthalmol 1996, 41:3-30. This extensive review covers all the shortcomings for effective visual screening in preschoolers and the conflicting data regarding refractive risk factors prior to the onset of esotropia and amblyopia. It is an excellent and comprehensive review of the literature.

The reliability of two commercially available photoscreening devices was tested and compared with the findings of a full ophthalmologic and orthoptic examination in early childhood.

Eye 1996, 10:189-198. Two infant vision screening programs, photorefraction and videorefraction (with and without cycloplegia), were shown to be valid methods for screening for ametropia in infants and preverbal children. Wearing a partial spectacle correction did not affect the process of emmetropization but reduced the risk of amblyopia and strabismus.

In Transactions of the 23rd meeting of the European Strabismological Association. Edited by Spiritus M. Buren, The Netherlands: Aeolus Press: 1996:25-30. The visual screening program used in Sweden has proven to be efficient in reducing the prevalence of deep and moderate amblyopia. The child is examined at several occasions before the age of 4 years, when the first visual acuity test is performed. Strabismus is usually detected before the age of 4 years, whereas the 4-year examination catches the ametropias, anisometropias, and microtropias.

8. Lennerstrand G, Rydberg A: Results of treatment of amblyopia with a screening program for early detection. Acta Ophthalmol Scand 1996, 74(suppl 219):42-45. The Swedish screening program for early detection of visual dysfunction was evaluated regarding the results of treatment of amblyopia. Screening of monocular visual acuity at 4 years of age appears to provide a good basis for detection and treatment of amblyopia.

A retrospective study was conducted of children referred from screening at 3.5 years during a 2-year period. Most of them achieved a good visual outcome with treatment.
