Sucralfate and basic fibroblast growth factor promote endothelial cell proliferation around porous alloplastic implants in vitro
-
Nicaeus TE, Tolentino MJ, Adamis AP, Rubin PAD: Sucralfate and basic fibroblast growth factor promote endothelial cell proliferation around porous alloplastic implants in vitro. Ophthal Plast Reconstr Surg 1996, 12:235-239. Basic fibroblast growth factor has been shown to stimulate endothelial cell growth and sucralfate binds and stabilizes bFGF. In this in vitro study, Medpor and HA discs coated in sucralfate and bFGF exhibited a twofold to threefold increase in endothelial proliferation over control discs.

Periocular autografts in socket reconstruction
-
Beaver HA, Patrinely JR, Holds JB, Soper MP: Periocular autografts in socket reconstruction. Ophthalmology 1996, 103:1498-1502. Autogenous grafts were used to cover primary, secondary, and exposed HA and Medpor implants. The autografts used were corneoscleral buttons or scierai grafts from the enucleated eyes, the implant capsule from migrated implants that were being removed, and supraorbital rim periosteum.

Complications of porous spherical orbital implants
-
Remulla HD, Rubin PA, Shore JW, Sutula FC, Townsend DJ, Woog JJ, Jahrling KV: Complications of porous spherical orbital implants Ophthalmology 1995, 102:586-593. Eleven exposed porous spherical orbital implants from a group of 101 patients were seen. Implant exposure was more likely in patients who had undergone evisceration. No treatment was necessary for small exposures (1 to 5 mm). Medium and large exposures were treated with implant surface revision or replacement.
