During the several months taken to obtain crystals suitable for structural determination, a counterion exchange occurred such that the crystal of the [3]rotaxane contained a mixture of chloride and nitrate anions. This situation was not unexpected, since a similar event occurred during crystallisation of an analogous [2]rotaxane. See reference 1.
