New advances in the understanding of sporadic inclusion body myositis and hereditary inclusion-body myopathies
-
Askanas V, Engel WK: New advances in the understanding of sporadic inclusion body myositis and hereditary inclusion-body myopathies. Curr Opin Rheumatol 1995, 7:486-496. This paper gives a detailed account of the histopathologic features of sporadic and hereditary IBM, highlights some of the parallels between IBM and Alzheimer's disease, and provides some theories as to pathogenesis.

Mitochondrial DNA deletions in muscle fibers in inclusion body myositis
-
Oldfors A, Moslemi A-R, Fhyr I-M, Holme E, Larsson N-G, Lindberg C: Mitochondrial DNA deletions in muscle fibers in inclusion body myositis. J Neuropathol Exp Neurol 1995, 54:581-587. A thorough analysis of the mitochondrial DNA deletions in the muscle of patients with sporadic IBM. Deletions were detected in all 20 patients and all showed evidence of a common 5-kb deletion, although some patients showed multiple deletions. Single fibers within individual patients had only one type of deletion. Discusses the origin of these deletions and their relevance to the pathogenesis of IBM.
