This important paper provides information regarding BHR as a risk factor not only for active asthma but also for subsequent asthma in individuals with asymptomatic BHR.

Am Rev Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 152:1302-1308. This important epidemiologic study shows the associations between BHR and atopy and between BHR and baseline pulmonary function. It also demonstrates that the prevalence of BHR decreases with time and that children who are not atopic are most likely to outgrow BHR as they enter adolescence.
16. Mochizuki H, Shigeta M, Kato M, Maeda S, Shimizu T, Mirokawa A: Age related changes in bronchial hyperreactivity to methacholine in asthmatic children. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 152:906-910. This is an important study measuring BHR in young children. These investigators were able to demonstrate BHR in children 2 to 5 years old, a group not extensively studied in the past. Thus, BHR is indeed present even in small children with asthma.

Arch Dis Child 1995, 73:423-426. In this study, parents of children with viral-induced wheezing were tested for BHR in an attempt to determine whether there is a genetic basis for this type of wheezing. Unfortunately, the children themselves were not tested for BHR.
