The Leishmania genome comprises 36 chromosomes conserved across widely divergent human pathogenic species
-
15. Wincker P, Ravel C, Blaineau C, Pagès M, Jauffret Y, Dedet J-P, Bastien P: The Leishmania genome comprises 36 chromosomes conserved across widely divergent human pathogenic species. Nucleic Acids Res 1996, 24:1688-1694. This paper demonstrates that chromosomal physical linkage groups have been conserved between different species of Leishmania. This observation is of particular importance, not only for the assignment of loci to specific chromosomes but in that it suggests that the organizational structure of the Leishmania genome may also be highly conserved. It is therefore justifiable to generate genome sequence data from a single model species of Leishmania.

An expressed sequence tag analysis of full-length, spliced-leader cDNA libraries from Leishmania major promastigotes

Levick MP, Blackwell JM, Connor V, Coulson RMR, Miles A, Smith HE, Wan K-L, Ajioka JW: An expressed sequence tag analysis of full-length, spliced-leader cDNA libraries from Leishmania major promastigotes. Mol Biochem Parasitol 1996, 76:345-348. All Leishmania mRNAs have a 5′ spliced-leader sequence and a 3′ poly(A); Levick et al. have described a pilot study of the sequence data generated from full-length Leishmania cDNAs. These ESTs - the sequences of which have been logged in the GenBank dbEST sequence database - are available to the international community (as are all those sequenced subsequent to the publication of this review).
