    • Conducting states of mammalian serotonin transporter
    • In the firsl series of experiments to apply voltage-clamp analysis to a mammalian monoamine carrier, the authors demonstrated that transport-associated, leak, and transient currents are associated with expression of the rat serotonin transporter (rSERT) in Xenopus oocytes. The results of these studies strongly support the contention that the serotonin transporter shares several properties with ionic channels, and that some of rSERTs electrical properties differ markedly from those of the related GABA transporter (GAT1) protein [15].

    • A larger AMPA receptor-mediated current and a smaller transporter-mediated current were observed in response to the application of glutamate to islands of glia in a hippocampal microculture preparation. The evidence provided supports the contention that currents mediated by glutamate Irans-porters are of sufficient magnitude to depolarize glia following neuronal stimulation
