This review outlines clearly how expressed emotion is most likely to represent a reciprocal interaction between patient and parent. In addition, it discusses the intriguing hypothesis that parental expressed emotion may be part of the same genetic predisposition to the psychopathology observed in the child.

J Psychosom Res 1995, 39: 995-1005. The authors review work on criticism and conflict in families of children with asthma and present pilot data showing that parental criticism, as measured by the Five Minute Speech Sample, is associated with poorer compliance in adolescents with asthma. The implications for therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Edited by Cicchetti D, Toth SL. Rochester, New York: University of Rochester Press; 1995:133-166. This chapter is a scholarly overview of the expressed emotion literature, It makes a compelling argument for the idea that, at least for the families of adults with schizophrenia, high expressed emotion may largely represent a reaction to the stress of caring for an ill relative.
