A comprehensive genetic map of the human genome based on 5264 microsatillites
-
Dib C, Fauré S, Fizames C, Samson D, Drout N, Vignal A, Millasseau P, Séboun E, Marc S, Lathrop M: A comprehensive genetic map of the human genome based on 5264 microsatillites. Nature 1996, 380:152-154. This map is one more milestone in the Human Genome Project and in the discovery of human genes. It was produced by the Généthon, with the main financial support of the Association Française contre les Myopathies (the French Muscular Dystrophy Association). The first map published by the same group in 1992 was the most cited scientific paper the year after and is an invaluable tool for gene hunters. The new map brings the genetic mapping phase of the Human Genome Project to completion.

Na-Ca exchange activity is enhanced in cardiomyopathic Syrian hamster
-
2+ exchange current is increased in ventricular myocytes of Syrian hamsters (Bio 14.6) with cardiac failure. This increase, which appears related to the decreased SR function, may be responsible, at least in part, for increased action potential duration during cardiac failure.

Differential regulation of two types of intracellular calcium release channels during end-stage heart failure
-
Go LO, Moschella MC, Watras J, Handa KK, Fyfe BS, Marks AR: Differential regulation of two types of intracellular calcium release channels during end-stage heart failure. J Clin Invest 1995, 95:888-894. The first study investigating in failing human ventricles the relative concentrations of mRNAs coding for the ryanodine receptor and the inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor (IP3R). The accumulation of IP3R transcripts while ryanodine receptor transcripts decrease suggests the recruitment of a inositol phosphate-sensitive calcium pool for myofibrillar activation during end-stage heart failure.

An important study indicating that overstretching rat papillary muscles is associated with a marked increase in apoptopic myocyte cell death and, to a lesser extent, with increased apoptotic nonmyocyte cell death. If operative during heart failure, this mechanism could play an important role in myocardial remodeling during cardiac failure.
