    • Intramolecular interactions mediate pH regulation of connexin 43 channels
    • 1 (Cx43), it is shown that the C terminus, even when detached, can act as a pH-induced gating element, analogous to the 'ball and chain' mechanism for the inactivation of voltage-gated channels. Previously, a titratable histidine (His95) in the cytoplasmic loop near M2 had been implicated as part of the 'receptor' for the ball.

    • Opposite voltage gating polarities of two closely related connexins
    • 2 (Cx26) reveals opposite gating polarities of these two connexins, a surprising property that explains the rectification of gating previously seen in heterotypic combinations of the two. The voltage sensor is mapped to M1 and flanking regions, with Asp2 near the N terminus determining polarity.

It provides a qualitative comparison of gap junctional permeabilities to an array of dyes varying in size, shape and charge, and suggests that connexins form channels of different permeability - a property of major interest to the field at present.
