+ exchange in primary rat astrocytes: role of myosin light-chain kinase. Am J Physiol 1995, 269:C257-C266. This study shows that activation of the sodium-hydrogen exchanger in astrocytes depends on ATP but does not involve calcium-, cAMP- or protein kinase C-dependent pathways. In fact, it is demonstrated that shrinkage-activation of this exchanger is related to calmodulin-dependent myosin light-chain kinase and a phosphorylation increase in myosin light chains.

Burg MB: Molecular basis of osmotic regulation. Am J Physiol 1995, 268:F983-F996. In this excellent comprehensive review the author summarizes the present knowledge of the mechanisms triggered by long-term exposure of renal cell lines to hypertonic media. The transport and synthesis of sorbitol, myoinositol, betaine, taurine and glycerophosphocholine are reviewed, together with the first experiments aimed at identifying the region of specific genes involved in the hypertonicity sensor mechanism.
