Health Psychol 1996; 15:48-55. Thirty-one healthy men participated in this study. One particularly interesting feature was the inclusion of two additional assessment time points, 5 and 15 min after the end of the stressful task, as well as the usual assessment time points before, during, and immediately after the task. This procedure allowed the authors to observe that the NK activity response to acute stress may be curvilinear and characterized by a significant increase immediately after the stressor termination followed by a marginally significant decrease comparatively to baseline values. Besides, higher heart rate and blood pressure were found to predict increases in NK cell cytotoxicity, as well as reduced proliferative response to concanavalin A, but not to pokeweed mitogen.

    • Stability of individual differences in cellular immune responses to acute psychological stress
    • Marsland AL, Manuck SB, Fazzari TV, Stewart CJ, Rabin BS: Stability of individual differences in cellular immune responses to acute psychological stress. Psychosom Med 1995; 57:295-298. This study was conducted in 30 healthy participants who participated in two speech tasks separated by a 2-week interval. Across the two sessions, a significant decline in B-cell number and a proliferative response to PHA, as well as a significant increment in T-suppressor/cytotoxic cells and in CD56 cell count, were observed with the administration of the stressful task. More importantly, test-retest correlations computed on immune changes at both time points revealed a significant association of a high magnitude for heart rate and blood pressure rate, and of a moderate magnitude for proliferative response to PHA (but not to concanavalin) and for the number of circulating T-cells, T-suppressor/ cytotoxic cells, and CD56 cells. These results support the stability of individual differences in immune functioning.

This is the only study published this year to evaluate the clinical significance of immune alterations associated with psychological factors. Forty medical students participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to a foursession writing emotional expression intervention ('the most traumatic and upsetting experiences of your whole life') or a control condition, after which they received the first of their three hepatitis B vaccination. Although the results obtained when including participants with pre-existing levels of anti-hepatitis B antibodies were included are less convincing, the authors suggested that expression of traumatic experiences can have significant health consequences.

    • Bauer ME, Gauer GJ, Luz C, Silveira RO, Nardi NB, von Mühlen CA: Evaluation of immune parameters in depressed patients. Life Sci 1995, 57:665-674. Some demographic data and health behaviors may have an impact on immunity. Aware of these potentially confounding factors, the authors generally controlled for them when performing their statistical analyses. In this article, the authors relied on a more rigorous approach by pairing the depressed patients with identical control participants on the following variables: gender, age (with a range limit of 5 years), race, physical activity, socioeconomical levels, tobacco, and contraceptive use. Although this approach is certainly restricting, we can more confidently conclude whether the differences observed on immune functioning are related to depression or not.

    • Uchino BN, Cacioppo JT, Kiecolt-Glaser JK: The relationship between social support and physiological processes: a review with emphasis on underlying mechanisms and implications for health. Psychol Bull 1996; 119:488-531. This is an outstanding and comprehensive literature review covering the relationship between social support and the cardiovascular, endocrine, and immune systems. The authors describe the data qualitatively as well as quantitatively. Indeed, meta-analyses were performed when the number of similar studies was sufficient. An excellent discussion examining the potential mechanisms linking social support to physiological functioning follows.

A particularly interesting and relevant empirical question was tested in this study. Indeed, many HIV-seropositive patients have to face the death of their intimate partner and bereavement has been found to be related to immune changes. The longitudinal design of the study is another positive aspect.
