    • 4 was added and the mixture was stirred for a further 2-3 h at room temperature. The resulting solution was then poured into a Petri dish, and the ethanol and HCl were allowed to slowly evaporate over an extended period of time. In some cases, the mixture was aged at 40-60 °C for up to 5 days. Calcination of the resulting structure was performed at 540 °C under air at a heating rate of 1 °C/min. The resulting monolith initially had a smooth film structure; however, upon calcination, cracks appeared slowly over the film.

    • Synthesis of APTMS functionalized gold nanoparticles: 1 mL of 0.02-M hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) trihydrate was added to 94 ml of boiling water. To this, 5 mL of 0.03-M solution of sodium citrate was slowly added and the heating continued until a deep purple colored solution formed. To 5 mL of the resulting, cooled solution, 0.025 mL of a freshly prepared 1-mM APTMS aqueous solution was added and the system was stirred vigorously.
