The Teaching of History in Quebec Schools

The 1940s saw a number of complaints about the alleged narrowness of history teaching in Quebec. To take a typical example, Jean Bruchési of Université de Montréal in 1946 complained that 'all too often the study of history in French Canada has a marked tendency towards the narrowest regionalism,' in his 'History and National Life,' 180. Arthur Lebel, a Laval classicist, told a Toronto audience in 1958 that history teaching in Quebec schools was largely secular and pan-Canadian in outlook, though Marcel Trudel tells a different story in his memoirs.
