The first paper (part I [67]) concerns absorption and fluorescence data, high resolution spectroscopy and spectral hole burning with spatial insight on electron-phonon and spectral diffusion observed in these hybrid materials. The second paper [68] is devoted to the detailed vibrational analysis of fine resolved fluorescence and excitation spectra of guest porphyrins in the various sol-gel matrices studied.

    • Schaudel B, Guermeur C, Sanchez C, Nakatani K, Delaire J: Spirooxazine and spiropyran doped hybrid organic-inorganic matrices with very fast photochromic response. J Mater Chem 1997, 7:61-65. This paper shows how the hydrophylic-hydrophobic interactions between organic dyes and sol-gel matrices can be tailored to optimize the optical properties of the dye. Very fast photochromic responses, of the order of a second, are thus obtained.

Chem Mater 1998, 10:1945-1950. The grafting of a dithienylethene derivative to the polymer network allowed the preparation of photochromic hybrid materials with a large refractive index change upon UV radiation. Such thermally irreversible photochromic materials provide a high interest in the field of wave guiding.
