    • This effect has been observed previously in the study of the interaction of a gas with positive electron affinity on high Rydberg states of atoms. Basically, a bare iodine atom cannot accept the electron while conserving both energy and momentum, similar to the fact that isolated electrons cannot absorb a photon.
