note
-
Untagged PMA does not cause any difficulties in these experiments so long as it is taken into account in computing ionic strengths and so on. Untagged PMA is equivalent to having a higher degree of polymerization of the tagged PMA so long as it is the concentration of ions in the vicinity of the chromophore that effects the fluorescence quenching.

note
-
This is clearly an oversimplification because ions in the sphere of action are not necessarily 100% effective at quenching. However the simple Perrin model captures the main physical features of "contact quenching".
