The appearance of Talbot self-images depends crucially on the spatial coherence properties of the source. Interestingly, a related phenomenon can be observed using incoherent sources, as long as a further grating with small open fraction (“periodic point source”) is placed in front of the grating under study. This so-called Lau effect was demonstrated with potassium atoms and a coarse (Formula presented) microfabricated grating in J. F. Clauser and S. Li, Phys. Rev. A 49, R2213 (1994).
