34. Very recent reinvestigations of the crystal structure of Mb and MbCO (ref 26) revealed that even the heme group in MbCO is not totally planar. This finding does not seriously affect our considerations, however, because these distortions are significantly smaller than those observed for Mb and do not cause a significant metal displacement with respect to the pyrrole nitrogens.
