The azimuths quoted in this work refer to the symmetry of the Pt(111) surface because the inert gas monolayers are incommensurate. For the clean Pt(111) surface the [110)] and [112] azimuths correspond to the Γ̄-K̄ and Γ̄-M̄ directions, respectively. For the xenon and krypton monolayers, which are rotated approximately by 30° with respect to the Pt(111) surface, the Pt(111) [110] azimuth is close to the xenon Γ̄-M̄ direction.
