Hopf reported the vinylation of naphthoic acids with acetylene to give vinyl naphthoates. The procedure described in this paper is based on Hopf's synthesis of vinyl p-nitro-benzoate, but with the reaction conditions and workup procedures substantially altered. Our procedure avoids the inconvenient use of acetylene under pressure
