J Clin Invest 1996, 97:1422-1428. Hyperglycemia rapidly induces an increase in intracellular AGEs in endothelial cells. This increase is inhibited by antioxidants and bcl-2 expression, indicating that a reactive oxygen species-dependent process plays a central role in the generation of intracellular AGEs.

Biochemistry 1995, 34:1433-1438. 3-Deoxyglucosone is a major AGE precursor. The enzyme that reduces it to a nonreactive product is shown here to undergo glycation itself in vivo in liver and kidney. The effect of this intracellular glycation is to decrease the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme. Thus, AGEs may beget more AGEs intracellularly.
