The stress state of the specimen can be rendered truly hydrostatic with the use of metal gasket and fluid pressure transmitting medium [for a review of the experimental techniques see: A. Jayaraman, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 57, 1013 (1986]. In the megabar pressure range, the stress state can still become nonhydrostatic when either the pressure transmitting medium freezes under pressure or thinning of the gasket causes the specimen to bridge the anvils.
