It is not essential that the electronic curves cross (at some level of approximation). In case they do not, however, they should become energetically degenerate in the atomic limit to be simultaneously observed. In the latter case kinetic (radial derivative) coupling is generally non-negligible since it is likely to become comparable to the energy separation before the potential curves become a constant function of the internuclear distance.
