note
-
By "defect free" we mean spectra that show a symmetric central reflection peak with periodic fringes. The fringe pattern from other crystalline regions of the sample do show strong distortion, presumably due to disorder, and will be the subject of future study.

The refractive index of the silica spheres were determined previously as 1.4. The index of the interstitials was severely constrained to be near 1.5.

note
-
Note that the gap for this sample is relatively narrow (1.4%, normalized to its center frequency). Since narrow gaps are the most difficult to determine and the most susceptible to disorder, we intentionally chose a sample with low index contrast to demonstrate our method.

note
-
Our preliminary work shows that the damping of the experimental fringes, not well reproduced in Fig. 3, can be explained with more realistic boundary conditions than those used in the model of Ref. 18.
