    • Mitsuda et al. (Ref. 17) reported that the structural transformation from (2×1) to (1×1) occurred at the hydrogen surface coverage as low as 5% on C(111). We, however, noticed in this experiment that upon H exposure, the LEED spots that can be attributed to the (2×1) were greatly weakened, but still discernible at 0.5 monolayer hydrogen coverage. The coverage was determined by TPD.

    • e>10 h) of the C(111) surface to atomic hydrogen can significantly reduce the total absorption intensity of the CH stretching. The reduction is small ≈1 %/h, but becomes evident after long hours of the stepwise etching. It is expected that the prolonged etching can eventually cause unwanted damages on the (111) terraces and, consequently, reduce the band intensity. However, it is also possible that the reduction is due to the anisotropic hydrogen etching near surface steps, which decreases the size of terraces but slowly generates new faces pointing toward <111>, <111> and <111> directions.
