9. Both BINAP and Tol-BINAP are commercially available from Strem Chemicals Inc. The price of 1 g of Tol-BINAP is ∼1/3 the price of 1 g of BINAP. Both enantiomers gave identical results and were used interchangeably.
10. No traces of sulfonated amines were detected in the crude reaction mixtures. Control experiments which involved the heating of aryl triflates and amines in toluene gave no reaction, suggesting that the amines are not responsible for cleavage of the triflate.

22. 31P NMR analysis of the crude reaction mixture of the amination on an aryl bromide showed no trace of the monophosphine oxide of BINAP, suggesting that the ligand is not responsible for the reduction of the Pd(II) precatalyst to Pd(0) in these reactions.
