This classification is determined in Refs. 11 and 12. Briefly, the distinction between these effects is the direction of the electric field applied to the quantum-well layer. The quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE) is for the field perpendicular to the well and the quantum-confined Franz-Keldysh effect (QCFK) is for the field parallel to the well.
