Molecular modeling (geometry optimization by semiempirical methods using Spartan 5.0, solvent = water) does not resolve this contradiction. In the calculated most stable conformations, the C(5) hydroxylmethyl substituent of 1 is placed in pseudoequatorial position and the C(1)-OH in a pseudoaxial position, which matches very well with the shape of galacto- and not gluco-configurated glycosides.
