In three different experiments we got untractable reaction mixtures; after thiosulfate quenching, we identified a significant amount of benzaldehyde. We believe that oxidation might convert the starting N-benzyl group into a C-phenyl nitrone, which undergoes hydrolysis to benzaldehyde on aqueous workup.
