Most infected surgeons would be identified on initial testing because HIV test performance is very good, and once prevalent HIV infections are identified, it would take more than 10 years for a similar number of new infections to occur. Furthermore, if HIV incidence has decreased in surgeons since the 1980s, the level of HIV prevalence would never again be as high.
