    • Some syllables not consistently identifiable to the native Korean judges were presented to the English listeners but not included in the analysis. Syllables with initial /l/ and /ji/ were included in the presentation for other purposes but were not included in the analysis as these do not occur in Korean. Ratings ranged from 1 to 5 (highest) with the mode being 5. Tokens (3) rated 1 by one judge were rated at least 3 by other judges. The judge who gave lower ratings stated that some syllables sounded less educated and more “countrified,” although identifiable
