1. Schmideberg’s paper had originally been presented in English at a meeting of the in September 1933. Lacan bases his comments on the German version, later translated into English by Jacqueline Rose. A slightly different version of the paper has appeared as “Intellectual Inhibition and Disturbances in Eating”, in the International Journal of PsychoAnalysis in 1938; my quotations are from this early English version, described by Schmideberg as a “part” of the paper delivered to the British Society.
