1. Major groups are defined in Agenda 21 (the action plan that emerged from the Rio conference) as local authorities, NGOs, women, youth and children, academics and scientists, trade unions and workers, farmers, and indigenous people. Each has a chapter in Agenda 21 that defines their responsibilities.
2. UNED-UK is the National Committee for UNEP in the UK and the focal point for UNDP. It was set up in 1993 as a major groups forum in the UK.
3. Attending the discussions on behalf of the community were the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (for trade unions), the International Network of Environment Managers (for industry), Women's Environment and Development Organization (for women), a group of NGOs including UNED-UK, the German Forum on Environment and Development, International Network for Small Island Developing States NGOs, and Pan African Movement.
