Hewett (1980, 291) had suggested that the earliest dated use of the secret notched lap was c1213 in the nave roof of Wells Cathedral. Here the 11 eastern trusses use the open refined-entry notched lap and the rest the secret. It was thought the change marked when work was stopped by the Interdict, restarting after c1213 with the secret form. However Dan Miles has shown that the first 11 were felled 1212–13 (VA 29, 125), so the other trusses may be somewhat later.
