Alter (1981, p. 11) reminds us that more than 1500 years ago the Midrashists (Bereshit Rabba 84:11, 12) had already noticed Judah's deceiving of his father Jacob with a kid (Gen. xxxvii 31) and his being deceived by his daughter-in-law by a kid (Gen. xxxviii 17), and that in both stories haker-na is used in the dialogue (xxxvii 32, xxxviii 25). 6. Coats (1983) thinks that genealogical interest was not the main concern for the preservation of the story (p. 275).

8. B. Luther (1906) long time ago also pointed out the author's friendly position with regard to Judah: "Judah has not acted rightly; but he is excused because he found himself in a predicament" (E. Tr. 1991, p. 114).
9. The genealogy in Gen. xlvi 6-27 is usually assigned to P (see, e.g. Noth 1981, p. 266). We could also presuppose the Chronicler's knowledge of Gen. xxxviii (Williamson 1979, p. 359, n. 26). So Gen. xxxviii should have been written before the production of P and Chr.
