1. A somewhat different emphasis could be provided by choosing ‘dominant vs. submissive’ as a category, instead of‘higher vs. lower’.
2. While this differentiation is linked with an increased capacity for making emotional connections in the present, it is the separating which is emphasised rather than the reconnecting in Bowen’s scheme.
3. James Nelson’s analysis of separation and moral development has drawn this moral position and critique to my attention, although his conclusions arc very different to mine, placing far more emphasis on biologically determined factors.
4. This challenging of the idea of separating from the mother has been influenced by Johnella Bird’s explanation of the impact of gender socialisation upon therapy with men (1992). An element of Bird’s presentation included re-emphasising the mothcr/son relationship in contrast to the recent trend to emphasise the father/son relationship.
5. I have not included ‘person vs self as this relates more to the broader question of language which informs these dichotomies.
