    • According to Cotterell and Rice, the local stress field at the tip of a slightly curved two-dimensional crack is of a mode I type (opening mode) and the shear mode (mode II) equals zero as the crack extends. Note that if the shear mode is not equal to zero at the crack tip, the crack extends with an abrupt change in the tangent direction to the path (kink)
