    • This notation refers to the solution species used in the synthesis, S = surfactant or surfactant precursor, X = the acid anion which is usually C1-or Br- in syntheses carried out below the aqueous silica isoelectric point (SIP) (pH ~2), and I+ or I- is used to designate the charge of the solution inorganic species that are present. Neutral silica species are also present, with a concentration that varies with pH; however in our experience the condensation rate and the quality of the mesostructure that is formed varies inversely with the neutral silica concentration in the pH region immediately below the SIP.
