Toynbee's other major work was the Survey of International Affairs. Joining Chatham House in 1924, he immediately produced two retrospective volumes for the years 1920-24, the first entitled The World After the Peace Conference; then, the annual Surveys for 1925 to 1937 each of which appeared in the following year; and, finally, the 1938 volume, interrupted by the outbreak of war, which appeared in late 1940. He wrote the bulk of these, farming out some sections, notably the economic ones. He also made significant contributions to the final ‘Toynbee’ volume, The Eve of War, on the events of 1939 but which did not appear until 1958; and he supervised the RIIA ten-volume set on the Second World War, writing a substantial portion of the first volume
