In the literature on this subject a distinction is drawn between the procedure used on the Atlantic seaboard, termed ‘whole moulding’ (the method of deriving the shape of all the frames from the mainframe, varying the curves at some points) and alleged ‘Mediterranean moulding’, claimed to be the method described by Mediterranean seafaring documents. In fact, the two methods are one and the same thing, or at least were when the Mediterranean method was adopted in the North.

Fabrica di galere One reads, for example, in Enrico Dandolo's note (Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, XII) of a hundred galleys and twenty ships being built in Venice in 1172 in the space of a hundred days. According to the, building a light galley in those days took 1,400 working days of which 200 were by segadori, 600 by shipwrights and 600 caulkers. Since the labour force had to remain as stable as possible, the usefulness of having the workers prefabricate parts for future ships in slack periods was obvious
