The real national dimensions of this problem became clear to us at a well-attended workshop on "The introductory physics course for engineering and physical sciences" organized by Professors Clifford Swartz and Max Dresden at Stony Brook in September of 1987. The message was clear from every one of the 20 distinguished speakers: The problem is universal; there are no easy answers!
2. The course was based on the text Prelude to Physics by Clifford Swartz (Wiley, New York, 1983).
