This piece derives from my recently published book, Code of the street: decency, violence, and the moral life of the inner city (New York: Norton, 1999), which was based on four years of fieldwork in inner-city neighborhoods about Philadelphia, especially the hypersegregated communities at ground zero characterized by profound and persistent poverty.
