Faced with a learning programme with a strong tradition of questioning existing knowledge, the prospect of giving “teaching room” to AL could seem distinctly offputting, if not dangerous, to some university academics.

An interesting approach to helping people acquire skills to work within a set emerged unexpectedly from the University of East Anglia's part-time MA in Human Resource Strategy. Although not using learning sets, as part of this research degree, participants are offered a model for learning to work in groups called “analytical discourse”

Soon after this research had been completed, the International Foundation for Action Learning (IFAL) held a one-day workshop conference on Action Learning in Higher Education in September 1996. Organized by Sue Williams at Wolverhampton University Business School, some 13 people attended from different universities and institutions. Plans are underway by the author to develop an AL Higher Education Network under the aegis of the IFAL
