    • This nomenclature [2] refers to the overall bonding changes which occur in a rearrangement and implies nothing about the mechanism of the process. Although the sigmatropic rearrangement nomenclature was originally used by Woodward and Hoffmann for “uncatalyzed intramolecular process” [2], it has been widely employed in recent years to characterize reactions which are not of this mechanistic type. We feel the term is now best used in a non‐mechanistic sense.
