In this paper I am concerned both with identifying as the object of study a dependent variable that does indeed vary and with developing a theory that is capable of being translated into refutable hypotheses and that specifies the direction and strength of causality among important factors. My approach is not to be confused with the kind of empiricism, derived from Locke, that Marx criticized. Marx objected, as do I, to a theory based only on sensory experience. (See, [Boston: Routledge & Kegan Paul], for a discussion of Marx's critique.) Moreover, I intend to use deductive reasoning. I shall begin with stated assumptions and first principles in order to derive refutable hypotheses; the tests of these hypotheses can then be used to modify and improve the theory itself.
