    • No doubt age, in a general sense, plays a role in the decision to retire (see Baum 1985). Yet we believe that the importance of age in this regard might be more complex than conventional wisdom would have us believe. For example, in reference to congressional retirements, Hibbing (1982c) found that the age-retirement relationship was declining in importance, and Brace (1985) reported that controlling for seniority lessened the effect of age on retirement. Furthermore, Schmidhauser (1962) contends that it is the justice actively participating in developing the law who is least likely to retire. Federal judges in this sense would be following even more closely the political and career cues of their congressional cohorts. In addition to these notions that age may not play a primary role in retirement rates, recent comments from some federal judges indicate that corporate and political factors may loom larger among the conservative, Republican judicial cohort in their decisions whether to remain in public service (Johnston 1989). It is also quite possible that family wealth/income among the higher echelon of public servants would be as influential as age in the decision to stay in or to leave office. Even the research on retirement among the working public (Sheppard 1976; McConnell) found that individuals with higher status occupations were not as likely to retire because of age.
